Meals on Wheels is dedicating the whole month of March to bringing awareness to senior citizens in need of healthy meals and wellness visits, in their annual March for Meals event.

The Miss Deer Park Scholarship Association is actively working behind the scenes in preparation for the 2020 program, which will be held at Deer Park High School March 14th. This year there are eight contestants: Ainsley Carpenter, Kari Jones, Kylee Krous, Janessa Sexton, Shaylee Overturf, Isabella Sedeno, Sydney Breckner and Hannah Moore.

Emergency responders in Stevens County responded to a serious crash, March 5th, on Highway 292. According to the Stevens County Fire District No.1 Facebook page, “A suspected medical event caused the driver to crash directly into a guardrail at highway speed. Approximately 6-8 feet of the guardrail ended up in the passenger compartment, trapping the lone victim”.

Washington State Department Of Transportation (WSDOT) has been using text communications on your phone to update you on road conditions for a while. However, they have recently changed their system to no longer use texts, but to use their custom app.

As some of you may know, the Deer Park Gazette is a family-owned newspaper. Ellie Chambers, our editor, is my sister. While preparing the January issue, our mother, Joan Schut, passed away. As a result of this loss, we needed to take a short break to remember her and regroup as we prepare for our future without her.

Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels is teaming up with Deer Park to help fight senior isolation and hunger at the annual March for Meals.

The Colville School District announced on March 2nd, that the schools will be closed until a student under investigation for COVID-19 (the Coronavirus) is confirmed with either positive or negative test results. These test results could take up to 3 days, during which time the school district will be disinfecting the buildings.

The Loonsday race organizers are having a t-shirt design contest! The winning design will be used on all the finisher tees and sweatshirts.
