Construction Starts Monday On Loon Lake Roundabout

Update: WSDOT has announced that due to labor issues the roundabout portion of the project will not start until September. The repaving portion of the project is still schedule to start August 15th.

The project for the intersection of Highway 395 and State Route 292/Gardenspot Road in Loon Lake starts next week. Travelers will deal with four different stages of detours for the first 15 days of the project.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will start construction on the new compact roundabout at the intersection of Highway 395 and State Route (SR) 292, often referred to, by locals, as Four-Corners. In addition to the roundabout, they will grind and inlay a little more than twelve miles of roadway on Highway 395 in Stevens County between the intersection with SR 292 in Loon Lake north to Hafer Road. Crews will be grinding out the pavement and replacing the roadway surface with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to create a smoother ride and preserve the roadway.

What to Expect

Work on the paving portion and roundabout is expected to begin Monday, August 15th, and last 47 working days. Travelers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes during the paving portion of the project.

Access to the intersection at SR 292 and Highway 395 will be restricted for 15 days while crews work to construct a roundabout. Drivers will be redirected through the work zone during the following four stages of the project.

  • Stage 1: Two-way traffic on Highway 395 through the work zone while crews work on the western shoulder of Highway 395. Access to the intersection at Garden Spot Road to the east and SR 292 to the west will remain open.
  • Stage 2: Continued access to Highway 395, with two-way traffic, redirected west of the future roundabout. SR 292 and Garden Spot Road will be closed at the intersection of Highway 395. Access to Garden Spot Road from Highway 395 via Williams Valley Road in Clayton. Access to SR 292 from Highway 395 via the Maple Street exit.
  • Stage 3: Two-way traffic on Highway 395 will be directed to the east of the future roundabout. Access to Garden Spot Road from Highway 395 will reopen, and access to  SR 292 via the Maple Street detour.
  • Stage 4: Both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 395 through the roundabout will be open. SR 292 will still be closed with a detour at Maple Street.

Due to supply and demand issues, many local projects have had extensions as a result. However, no matter how long this project lasts, take your time traveling and watch out for road crews.
