The high school students pictured from left to right are Parker Carroll of Riverside High School, Dylan Hall of Deer Park High School, and Michelle Herseim of Mary Walker High School.

The Deer Park Rotary Club members picked three students for February’s Student of the Month.

Deer Park School District
Principal Joe Feist introduced us to Dylan Hall, a fantastic citizen.  He is extremely helpful and volunteers for everything; he is a volunteer extraordinaire.  Dylan carries a 3.75 GPA and has attended Deer Park Schools since pre-school.  He is a member of the baseball team that went to the Quarter Finals this year and according to Principal Feist, a heck of a football player.  He has a passion for Wood Shop and Welding.  One of his wood shop projects, landing him some recognition in the school for the first time, was creating a herringbone table with a hinge.  It was the first time anyone added the hinge.  Principal Feist said he’d seen the table and it was beautiful. Dylan favors Walnut as his woodworking preference. He’s considering becoming a Wildlife Fire Fighter and is looking into what that requires.

Riverside School District
High School Principal Clint Hull introduced Parker Carroll as a Renaissance Man.  Parker is a Spokane Scholar in all but one category, plays sports, and is involved in a little of everything. All 13 years of school, he has attended at Riverside.  He holds a 3.9 GPA, is a 4-year Spanish student and performs in both the Jazz and Pep band, where he plays Tenor Saxophone. In addition, he has been working on getting his EMT license and volunteers with the South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue Department.  After graduation, he wants to enter the workforce, then attend either EWU or WSU in the fall and major in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Spanish.

Mary Walker School District
Emily Spencer, Counselor at the high school, introduced Michelle Herseim as one who lights up a room as soon as she enters it.  Students and staff respect her. Michelle is the Theatre Program President and a mentor for the entire school.  She has been accepted at Whitworth University and will be the first person in her family to attend college.  She is a caring person who has done a lot of community service, including food drives and fundraisers.  Michelle carries a 3.2 GPA and says her favorite classes are theater and art.  She creates her own art and has begun selling it to get known and help financially with college.  It’s all about family, school family, and church family for Michelle. She wants to go into Nursing because she has helped “nurse” her Mother to health, plus she loves helping people more than anything.  Michelle feels blessed to have the support and encouragement of her family, Mrs. Shelton, and Mary Walker staff. She thanked the club for the opportunity to be here today as a student of the month.
