Libraries Offer Curbside Pickup

Spokane and Stevens County libraries are now offering curbside pick-up. You can place a hold on books, music, and movies and have them delivered to your car.

Library buildings will remain closed. Staff who are delivering curbside holds will not be accepting returns, but outdoor book drop-off boxes have been reopened.

Spokane County Library District states, “At first, pickup service is only for holds that have been on the shelves since before they closed in March. After that, they will be processing holds that came in after their libraries closed.”

Spokane County Curbside pick-up started on June 5th, and Stevens County Curbside will start on Monday, June 15th; however, both book drop-offs are available.

How To Place A Hold

Spokane County

Look for items in their online catalog; from there, you can place holds through the catalog itself or call the Deer Park Library for help. They will get items ready for you when they become available, and notify you when they are ready for pickup.

Please note that materials in their Library of Things collection are not available for holds and check out at this time.

Stevens County

Patrons will be limited to requesting 10 items per visit, for the time being. Cards will still have a total limit of 40 items. All types of library materials (DVD’s, books, books on CD, magazines, etc.) will be available to select for curbside pick-up.

Library website now allows patrons to place holds on library materials for curbside pickup.

How To Pick Up Your Books

Spokane County

You can pick up holds at the library once you are notified that they are available. (Deer Park branch: Tuesday–Saturday, 12–6pm, curbside pick-up only available when signs are in the parking lot.)

  • Pull your vehicle into one of the designated curbside pickup parking spots at your library.
  • Call the curbside pickup number on the sign.
  • Provide your name, library card number, and a description of your vehicle. (You may pick up items for family members if you have their library card number(s).)
  • Please wait in your vehicle and be patient while staff check out your held items to you in our computer system.
  • Staff will place your bagged library materials on a cart and wheel them to the curbside for delivery as agreed to on the phone.
  • Please do not try to hand returns to the librarians at this time; drop them in the return box.

Vehicle delivery options:

  • If your vehicle has a trunk, hatch, or side door, and a 6-foot distance can be maintained, then staff will place your holds in your vehicle. Please stay in your vehicle during this process.
  • If your vehicle does not have a way for staff to safely place the materials inside while maintaining a 6-foot distance, then staff will place your bagged library materials on the curb next to your vehicle for you to retrieve, or have you retrieve them directly from the cart.
  • If you are traveling to the library on foot, or other means, call the phone number on the curbside pickup signs in the parking lot and explain your situation. Library staff will discuss how they will get you your items.

Stevens County

Hours for pick-up will be limited at most locations due to requirements of having fewer staff in the building, managing returns that require quarantine, and meeting disinfection standards.

Curbside pick-up is available only for items that have been requested ahead of time. Please allow a generous lead-time in order for staff to prepare your items for pickup.

Returning Your Books

All returned materials will be quarantined for 72-hours, as recommended by the CDC, before they are made available again.

Spokane County

Please place any items you are returning in the library’s book drop located outside of the building. If you are returning library materials that are too large for the exterior book drop, please call the library and discuss alternatives for returning those materials.

Stevens County

All bookdrops in Stevens County are open and ready for returns. Please remember, library materials checked out before library closure are not due back until July 1st, 2020.

Be Patient

Both library districts are working very hard on this and would like to remind their patrons that curbside pickup of library holds is a brand new thing. Your patience is greatly appreciated as they fine-tune the service.
