Impact Of Oregon Road Fire: Local Events & School Schedules

Perrins Field is currently one of the Fire Camp locations hosting wildland firefighters who are battling the Oregon Road Fire.

The ongoing Oregon Road Fire, scorching through more than 11,000 acres, has cast its shadow over the Deer Park community, triggering a series of reschedulings and venue changes for local events.

The Oregon Road Fire, with its extensive reach, has significantly impacted the daily lives of residents in Elk and the Greater Deer Park Area. This wildfire has necessitated the reevaluation of scheduled events to ensure safety and accommodate the needs of the firefighting efforts.

Riverside School District’s plans have been notably affected. The Open House & Ribbon Cutting event, originally set for August 29th, has been pushed back by a week, now slated for September 5th. The first day of school, set a day after the Open House, will now welcome students on September 6th. Regrettably, Riverside High School will not be participating in the Football jamboree scheduled for tonight due to these alterations.

In a post on the Riverside School District website Superintendent Ken Russell wrote “While a difficult decision, our team of students, parents, certificated and classified staff, a Board member, and community members, in consultation with the fire district and Red Cross, feels confident this change in the start date best supports our students, families, staff, and community members most impacted by the fire and best sets us up to meet our collective mission of educating our students and bettering our community.” He continued by saying “As we prepare for a successful start to the school year, we really want to know each of our student’s individual circumstances, especially those most impacted by the fire. If you have not received a phone call from our schools, please reach out to let us know what support you need.”

Traditionally held at Perrins Field, the Deer Park Market will be held at Mix Park, situated at 301 W. 4th Street in Deer Park. The usual location of the market, Perrins Field, is currently being used as one of the fire camps for Wildland Firefighters battling the Oregon Road Fire. The Deer Park Market will also collect funds to help people impacted by the fire to recover.
