Big Plans For City Hall, Maybe

City Hall has not seen substantial modifications in many years. Two possible plans or the option of doing nothing have been in discussion. However, the big question remains, what is the value of history?

City Hall Plans B & C
Two plans are currently under consideration. Plan B calls for removing the historic structure and building a new city hall in the same location. Plan C would remove two additions to the building constructed in 1936 and 1980, retaining the original 1911 construction. Plan C would also add to the east and west of the building. The City Hall Taskforce eliminated Plan A as part of their process.

Another option that the City Council is considering is not doing anything. It was pointed out that there have already been problems with bricks falling from the third floor near ground-level doors. Additionally, there is concern about the sewer system backing up into the building at some unknown point in the future.

Wheeled All-Terrain Vehicles On Public Streets
Washington State has made it legal for Wheeled All-Terrain Vehicles (WATVs) to be on public streets. However, the City must first create regulations per state laws. At the next city council meeting, there will be a public hearing regarding the ordinance.

Airport Open House
The Airport Technical Advisory Committee has put together an Airport Layout Plan update that will allow them to better accommodate the kinds of aircraft currently using the airfield. Once completed, it would allow aircraft using the airport to take off with a full load of fuel, something that can not be done now because of primarily weight restrictions. Fuel sales are a major component of the airport’s financial security.

Letter To The Editor – School Levy Importance

As a city council member in the late 70’s and early 80’s and a city employee for 24 years I have heard a lot of misinformation disseminated through “coffee shop” talk and later social media. It has always concerned me to hear incorrect information passed along by people who don’t bother to ask for the facts, when they are readily available. Right now I am hearing of things being said about the Deer Park School levy, particularly the need for a new bus barn, that are troubling.
