The high school students pictured from left to right are Haidyn Parker of Mary Walker High School, Layne Lathrop of Deer Park High School, and Kali Brown of Riverside High School.

The Deer Park Rotary Club members picked three students for December’s Student of the Month.

Deer Park School District
Principal Joe Feist introduced Layne Lathrop. Layne, a Deer Park High School senior, just finished the Cross Country Season, finishing 8th at the State Cross Country Meet. She is also an all-league softball player. Layne carries a 3.95 GPA and is an excellent student. Principal Feist says she is very quiet while getting a lot done. She’s a wonderful citizen and just wonderful to be around. Layne thanked her parents for everything they’ve done to get her where she is today and thanked all her school teachers for their help. Her favorite thing about the school is the fun clubs, sports, and activities. Layne is the current Executive Treasurer for ASB, and they are planning the “Prom Spectacular,” an event in April that brings all of the special needs kids in the area to Deer Park High School for a memorable experience. Layne’s goal is to be able to run in college, and she wants to attend the University of Montana. During her speech, she thanked the Rotary Club for sponsoring “A Night at the North Pole.” She has not decided what to pursue in college but said she loves the Engineering Program at Deer Park, which might be her direction.

Riverside School District
Principal Clint Hull introduced Kali Brown, a senior at Riverside High School. Kali came to Riverside in the second semester of her freshman year, where she went from a school of 4000 students to one with 500 students. Riverside has always felt welcoming to her. Kali thanked her mom for her support. Kali has a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Sports have been a large part of high school for her. She recently placed 3rd in the 200 Meter in Track and has been a 4-year member of the Soccer Varsity Team. Along with her family, she loves backpacking, snowshoeing, mountain biking, and anything outdoors! She has been accepted in a volunteer program to teach English for three months this summer to less fortunate students in either Nicaragua, Mexico, or Thailand. She has always been interested in the medical field and has thought about going into Radiology but is still deciding.

Mary Walker School District
Haidyn Parker, a Mary Walker High School senior, was introduced by School Counselor Emily Spencer. Haidyn is a Running Start Student and will graduate this year with an AA degree. She currently holds a 3.8 GPA. She is a full-time student at Spokane Falls Community College and continues to be involved at Mary Walker as President of the new Youth Coalition. This has given her a great work ethic and dependability and made her humble-“I value others.” As a freshman, she participated in Spirit Week and was the photographer of the Volleyball Team. She gave a BIG shout-out to her parents for their love and support and for making her who she is today. Her parents own a hunting business which has taught her perseverance. She loves Philosophy and English Literature classes, reading, writing, hunting, and fishing. She is currently admitted to Whitworth, where she will pursue English or Psychology, then she wants to go to Gonzaga Law School. She even has her internship all planned out: 5th Avenue Law Group in Seattle.

After the students got down from the podium, Principal Feist mentioned how impressive all three presentations were today. Also, he said to the students and their parents the importance of applying for the Leadership or Vocational scholarships Deer Park Rotary awards every year.
