Deer Park Rotarians Recognize the October 2022 Students of the Month.
Deer Park School District
Remi Scott is the Deer Park Student of the Month. In introduction, Principal Joe Feist told us Remi is an excellent student, carries a 3.9 GPA, and is Quarterback on the Deer Park Football team. What he admires most is that Remi is a solid, quiet leader. He’s always there, volunteering to help whether it’s for students who need help or school projects. He’s very involved and has a great future. Remi introduced his mother, Kathy Scott telling us that he owes everything to her and that she is amazing. Some of his favorites at the school are the shop class and weight room; he loves lifting. Remi plays football, basketball and runs track in the spring and is captain of all three sports. This year, Track Coach Taylor Brudwick asked Remi to be TA in her Special Ed class. This has been a humbling and great experience for Remi. Outside of school, Remi likes hunting, fishing, being outdoors and working out. He works at the Bike Shop in Deer Park with Deron Schroeder. Remi told us some of the things happening at Deer Park and said Mr Heuett, the new Vice Principal is awesome, super personable. He really enjoys the atmosphere at Deer Park and it’s been an all-around great experience. He hopes to earn a football scholarship at a four-year school and is mainly looking at Montana Western in Dillon, Montana. He would like to be an Athletic or Personal Trainer and someday open a gym in Deer Park. He was asked his favorite part about working with the Special Ed students. He replied that again, it was very humbling and a misunderstood part of the school. He said it’s been very beneficial to him because he’s learned so much about the students and Special Ed. He enjoys working with the students and one particular student is the super bright spot in his day!
Riverside School District
Principal Clint Hull introduced Bree Waldron, Student of the Month from Riverside High School. He said Bree was a member of the freshman class when he came to Riverside. He has watched this class of students grow and it is obvious that Bree is one of the leaders. She is involved and someone he has leaned on to know the pulse of the student body. Bree began by introducing her parents, Angelique and Andy Waldron. Bree carries a 3.5 GPA and her favorite classes this year are pre-calculus and chemistry, pre-requisites for her degree in college. She plays soccer and softball at Riverside, serves as the team captain of both and is a Four-Year Letterman in both sports. For fun, she plays softball for the Spokane Diamonds and has been able to travel to states outside Washington like Oregon, Montana and this past year, to Oklahoma to expand the search for colleges. She especially enjoys going camping with family and friends. She is going to Columbia Basin College to pursue her softball career and study Dental Hygiene. She hopes to become a Dental Hygienist and return to Spokane in that role. Bree said Riverside has been a huge part of her life. The Riverside community is like a big family and she enjoys being a part of the community. The school staff has been supportive of her journey toward college and her future dreams. Riverside is a fun school and she has made so many close friends that will be forever friends.
Mary Walker School District
When introducing Student of the Month Laila Baggar, School Counselor Emily Spencer told us she is quiet but when she speaks up, she’s passionate, determined and she gets things done. Laila is an all-around amazing person and they love having her at Mary Walker. Laila thanked the club and thanked her parents, Adil Baggar and Dawn Hegel for pushing her to be where she is today. Laila plans to go to college after high school with a goal of becoming an elementary school teacher or lawyer. She has applied to Washington State University, Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University and a few others. Her favorite class is College and High School English Comp 1 and said it prepares her for college. She believes her strong work ethic sets her apart from other students and when at home, education comes first. Laila is in Upward Bound, a program for first generation college students and has a 3.6 GPA. She loves helping in her community and has helped clean up trash at Long Lake each year, worked at the Ford food bank giving out food to those in need and helps take care of her little brothers when her parents are busy at work. In her spare time, she likes to read romance novels. When answering questions, Laila said WSU and EWU are at the top of her college list and she likes to travel. She again thanked the group for the opportunity to be here and for the chance to apply for a scholarship.
