“In an abundance of precaution and to heed the CDC’s call for social distancing, Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels has announced the temporary closure of our 12 Silver Cafe sites as of March 20th,” Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels posted recently on Facebook.

Between now and the 20th, to-go boxes of food will be available for pickup but there will not be an eat-in option.  Meals on Wheels is asking their regular Silver Cafe guests to sign up for home delivery, if needed, when they pick up their to-go boxes. “This is just one of the steps GSC Meals on Wheels is taking to ensure the safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff.”

We Need Your Help

The loss of their eat-in location has drastically raised the need for more drivers to help cover the 1,800 square miles of Spokane County, which includes at least 500 regular cafe guests in the Spokane area. 

Meals on Wheels says they are desperate for drivers who can dedicate at least 2 hours of time to meal delivery. If you have time, are healthy and able, please contact GSC Meals on Wheels at 509-924-6976, or go to their website gscmealsonwheels.org

The target audience of Meals on Wheels is the same age group that is most at risk for a severe reaction to COVID-19. March 16th kicks off Meals on Wheels Champions Week.  Now more than ever, champions are urgently needed to help with this important service. 

Social Distancing

The painful irony is that one of Meals on Wheels’ primary goals is to fight the isolation of our senior citizens; however, with government mandated social distancing, our community will have to find other ways to combat loneliness.

Call your senior citizen friends and family members.  Share funny videos or find a way to play a game remotely.  Simply because we must be apart does not mean we have to be separated.
