If you want to have a wonderful garden for next year, prepare now with all those fallen leaves around your house! Did you know that up to 80% of a tree’s nutrients and minerals are pulled into the leaves? Adding them to your garden is a great way to replace those nutrients back into the soil.
What can be more awesome than kids and animals? How about teenagers serving their community by hosting an educational day that includes grade school children and animals? Agriculture education came to life when the Deer Park FFA Chapter held their annual Farm/Ag Safety Day on September 27th.
On November 23rd from 4-6pm, a free Thanksgiving meal will be held at Deer Park High School. The event, which is hosted by Christ’s Church of Deer Park, encourages you to “invite your friends, family, and neighbors and enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal with us.”
The tri-county area has been blessed with an abundance of rescue groups that will fit each family’s needs while also serving a wide variety of animals. Cats, dogs, horses, and even tigers are just a few of the animals that are cared for by our local rescue organizations.
Time to bring out your favorite art supplies and add some color to the picture on page 7. Send it back to us with an entry form and you could win one of three amazing prize packages. All ages are invited to submit their artwork.
Consider patronizing local restaurants during Dine Out To Help Out. Participating restaurants will donate 10% of their day’s proceeds to the GreenHouse Food Bank.
The Chamber of Commerce is one of the local groups working to help Deer Park move with purpose into the future. The Chamber’s Board of Directors is planning an open forum called “Building A Remarkable Community” for November 18th at Lofty Skies (851 S Main Street) to bring more people into this community conversation.
Winterfest planning is in full swing right now, and it’s time for the community to get involved in a big way. Many positions need to be filled and support is still required; however, volunteer participation continues to drop lower and lower.
A couple of new things are popping up in Deer Park right now. You may have noticed the new STCU sign lighting up Main Street behind the Medicine Shoppe (around 708 South Main Street). Additionally, Domino’s Pizza opened November 11th.
Each month’s prompt will be in the newspaper and on Facebook. Our favorite stories will be published the following month. Responses will be judged on creativity and the ability to communicate a story. Submit your six-word story by the 25th of each month.
