Owner Sean Johnson hopes to build a community-focused gaming hub for Deer Park.
A new gaming shop, Wizards Gaming, recently celebrated its grand opening, offering a community-focused space for gamers of all ages. Located in Deer Park, the shop provides a welcoming environment for both casual play and organized events for a variety of games.
Deer Park has a new spot for fans of tabletop and trading card games. Wizards Gaming, a game shop located on 113 N Main Street next to Rancho Alegre, officially opened its doors in late August after a soft opening. Owner Sean Johnson, a long-time gaming enthusiast, hopes the store will become a local hub for families and friends to connect and enjoy their hobbies. Johnson is a former resident of Idaho, then Chattaroy, and moved to Deer Park three years ago. With two children who have recently taken an interest in gaming, he was inspired to create a local business that catered to his family’s shared hobby. “I’ve always loved Magic:The Gathering and gaming of all kinds,” Johnson said. “My kids are at the age where they’re starting to get into gaming a lot, so I figured I’d open something for them”.
The shop is designed to be a community-oriented space where people can drop in and play games. Beyond the open play tables, the shelves are stocked with a wide selection of comic books, including titles like Conan and Wolverine, and a variety of board games such as Scrabble, Monopoly, Clue, and Twister. They also have an extensive inventory of loose cards for building custom decks. “It’s a community-oriented place; it’s a safe place for anybody to come in and game whenever they want…” Johnson stated.
The store hosts regular events for popular games. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, they hold Magic:The Gathering events, with a specific Commander League that players can sign up for using a QR code at the door. On Saturdays, the focus shifts to Dungeons & Dragons. Johnson also has plans to expand the event offerings to include Pokémon and Warhammer 40,000 in the near future.
Johnson is selling pre-built starter decks for newcomers to get into games like Magic:The Gathering and Pokémon, as well as booster packs for experienced players looking to expand their collections. He hopes to continue expanding the shop’s inventory and attract more players, especially during the colder months when indoor activities are a welcome option. Wizards Gaming provides a warm, welcoming environment for people to connect over their favorite games.
