Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers invites high school students in Washington’s Fifth District to participate in the 2024 Congressional Art Competition. The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. The deadline for submission is April 26th, 2024.
Since 1982, the Congressional Art Competition has provided a platform for young artists across the nation to exhibit their creativity. This year, high school students from Eastern Washington can submit various styles and types of art, including paintings, drawings, photography, and mixed media pieces.
The winning student will receive a special invitation to Washington, D.C. for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, where their artwork will be unveiled in the U.S. Capitol. Additionally, three runners-up will have the opportunity to display their entries in Congresswoman’s offices located in Spokane, Colville, and Walla Walla.
To be eligible, artwork must be as follows:
- Original in design
- No larger than 26” X 26” X 4” (including the frame)
- Weigh no more than 15 lbs
Each student may submit one piece of artwork with a typed copy of the 2024 Student Release Form securely attached to the back of the entry, signed by the teacher, a parent or guardian, and the student,to help certify the originality of the piece. Students are asked to retain a copy for their records. Students can utilize the 2024 Art Submission Checklist to ensure they’ve covered all the necessary steps for submitting their artwork. Each student is allowed to submit one piece of artwork that complies with the requirements outlined in the 2024 Rules for Students and Teachers.

Accepted mediums for the two-dimensional artwork are as follows:
- Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
- Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
- Collages: must be two dimensional
- Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
- Mixed Media: use more than two mediums, such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
- Computer-generated art
- Photographs
