WinterFest Ends With A Bang

Organizers rejoiced as this year’s WinterFest event ended with fireworks despite all the twists and turns thrown at the planning committee.

WinterFest was held this last weekend on January 15th, 2022, at Perrins Field and Deer Park Fire Station Meeting Room. The committee pulled off a fantastic feat after it’s coordinator was notified on January 5th that they could not utilize their long-term location at the Deer Park High School for hosting the events indoor activities. By the 10th of the month, they secured their new site; however, the spot was smaller, leading to several challenges for the organizers.  In addition, volunteers and activity coordinators were contacted to see if they could accommodate this last-minute change; some did have to cancel, but many rose to the challenge. So a revised schedule was posted on the evening of the 10th. On the evening of the 14th and early morning of the 15th, the Kiwanis and Key Club members set up the event space. The fire station was very helpful and accommodating to help with what was needed to make this event happen.

Some events started at 9am, including Friends of the Deer Park Library’s book sale, craft, vendor fair, and Kiwanis children’s book giveaway. The opening ceremony started shortly after 10am. The ceremony included the presentation of the colors by the Deer Park Civil Air Patrol, Mayor’s proclamation, Honored Citizen Marilyn Reilly was recognized, as was logo design winner Brittany Knutson. Jennifer Follansbee-Moss received Mayor’s Rock reward due to finding the rock at Masters Brewhouse. WinterFest committee members were also recognized, Kiwanis along with Local Royalty.

There was the 1 Mile Fun Run, Frostbite 5K, Outhouse Races, Snowshoe Relay, and Free Hot Chocolate Stand for those looking to enjoy the outdoors. The night wrapped up with a bang at 5pm with a fireworks display at the Deer Park Sports Complex.

The Kiwanis and WinterFest committee later posted their thanks to all volunteers who worked so hard; many had full-time jobs, families, and several volunteers dealing with illness. In addition, they thanked their sponsors, contributors, and donors who provided financial support, which made it possible for Deer Park WinterFest to offer so many free, fun family events and activities.
