Rotary Students of the Month September 2021

The students pictured left to right are Ali Lopez of Mary Walker, Jamar Distel of Riverside, and Isabella Strugarebic of Deer Park High Schools.

The Deer Park Rotary Club members were thrilled to have their first in-person Student of the Month program in 15 months on September 16, 2021.

Last school year, students could join the club’s meetings via ZOOM; however, having the students and family members present for lunch at First Street Bar and Grill was a welcome change.

Principal Clint Hull introduced Jamar Distel of Riverside High School as one of the true leaders of the school.  Jamar introduced his mother, Julie, and his grandmother, Jeannie, and credited his success to their example of hard work and dedication to excel.  Jamar is ASB president and a member of the track and cross-country teams at Riverside.  He enjoys the advanced classes he is in and is extremely grateful for the amazing teachers at Riverside since kindergarten.  He loves to be with friends and especially friends who are dedicated to Riverside!  Jamar, whose speech skills in front of a podium were impeccable, said his favorite subject is his English/Literature Class. He recently received a Highlander Trophy for Cross Country. Congratulations to Jamar, who recently learned that he has received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Washington next year and is looking at an emphasis in Sports Science.

Rotarian Marty Hilton introduced Ali Lopez of Mary Walker High School.  Ali’s mother also went to school there.  Ali was born and raised in Springdale. She has been the Student Class President since the 8th Grade and currently is ASB President at Mary Walker.  She enjoys volleyball, basketball, softball, hiking, yoga, and everything outdoors. Her favorite class is Civics History class.  She has a desire to go into Financial Management, and although from a very small town, she wants to see the world! She recently went to Alaska and would like to visit family in Mexico.  She may want to be a flight attendant, which would fulfill her goal of seeing the world.

Principal Joe Feist introduced Isabella Strugarebic of Deer Park High School.   She first thanked the Rotary for having her here and as DPHS Student of the Month.  Isabella was born in Sweden and has lived in Deer Park most of her life.  She is the current Student Body President and helps the younger students transition into high school every year.  She is in the Student Speaker/Student Hall of Fame through the YMCA. She wants to attend Eastern Washington University next year with an emphasis in Language Arts and Social Studies.  She is involved with varsity tennis.  She loves to ski, kayak and she recently participated in the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon event.  Swimming was her absolute favorite.  She is employed at the local Yoke’s store and recently got Associate of the Month.  She loves to “fly” and wants to get her Pilot’s license soon.  She has aspirations to become a Commercial Airline Pilot! She wants to attend Big Bend College possibly, then onto Washington State University.  She loves to read, especially fantasy novels.
