Meals on Wheels’ Diner’s Choice Program

Greater Spokane County (GSC) Meals on Wheels, a mobile meal delivery service providing meals to individuals 60 and older, has recently unveiled their Diner’s Choice Program. This program provides senior citizens in the area with a set of coupons to use at participating regional restaurants.

Every year, GSC Meals on Wheels, partially funded by Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington, delivers 260,000+ meals to struggling seniors in the Spokane area. A $5 contribution per meal is suggested, but individuals only pay what they can, and none are turned away based on their ability to pay. Each meal distributed provides one third of required daily nutrition, and for one third of the clients, it is their only meal of the day. For those with extra nutrition needed, a Liquid Nutrition program is also available, providing Ensure Plus in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla.

After closing congregate dining at their 12 Silver Cafe sites due to the pandemic, GSC Meals on Wheels is partnering with local restaurants to bring a new program to eligible seniors called the Diner’s Choice Program. This program provides one coupon per day good for one “Senior Special Meal” offered from a variety of meal options at any of the restaurants featured on their menu list. Current participating restaurants include Bob Mart, Biggies, Master’s Brewhouse, Pauline’s, Pizza Factory, and Salty Dog Eatery. Qualifying clients will receive a welcome packet with meal coupons distributed on the 1st and the 15th of each month, available for pickup at the Meals on Wheels office.

To qualify, clients must be 60 years of age or older, reside in Spokane County, and complete a registration form. Registration forms can be obtained from the GSC Meals on Wheels office and submitted back to the office or collected by a specified partner site manager, or the form can be completed over the phone. Once a staff member verifies a client’s eligibility and registration form, usually within 24 to 48 hours, coupon distribution will begin. There is currently no waitlist in Spokane. This new service cannot be combined with the home delivery program.

For more information, and to register for meal programs or check eligibility, please contact Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels:

For additional information regarding the Diner’s Choice Program, contact Char Chambliss (North County Program Manager) at (509) 951-3477.

This is a pilot program; policies are subject to change and the pilot program may be discontinued at any time. Registration does not guarantee eligibility.
