Rotary Student of the Month: December

Hannah Carnahan is the December Student of the Month from Deer Park High School. Hannah, a member of the Associated Student Body and Link Crew loves “being part of a great social atmosphere.” Playing soccer since the age of 5, she now plays for the school team.  She said that since COVID, ASB is having trouble putting plans together but she is now part of the team forming Spirit Week.  Hannah wants to go into nursing first and then has aspirations of becoming a Physician’s Assistant. She will be starting at North Idaho College.

Mary Walker’s Kalinik Martushoff is the December Student of the Month. Kalinik’s family originated in Russia and China, and his sister was the first in his family to go to college. He loves to write and is very interested in art. His favorite subjects are science and geography, and he has a 3.5 GPA . He is a member of Mary Walker’s Honor Society, the varsity basketball team, and previously held offices in student government.  One of his favorite pastimes revolves around video games!  He is currently looking at the University of Oregon with a future in architecture.  

Principal Clint Hull introduced Whitney Reiber, December Student of the Month from Riverside High School as a “mover and a shaker who has so much kindness and empathy for others”.Whitney comes from a large generation who attended Riverside High School. “Reading, drawing and school are the most important things to me,” said Whitney.  She loves calculus and math because they make your brain work!  Currently a member of Riverside’s Honor Society, she formerly held offices in the Associated Student Body.  After high school, she wants to attend Spokane Community College to receive her Associates Degree. Whitney is very interested in continuing on to Veterinary School or a future of working with animals in some capacity.

In Memory of Don/Donnie Gilmore

Donald “Donnie” Eugene Gilmore of Deer Park, Washington, passed away on June 12, 2026, at the age of 73. He was born in Spokane, Washington, on August 22, 1952. In 1973, Don enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served on active duty for two years. In 1983, he graduated with a degree in education from Eastern Washington University. Don was a beloved teacher at Springdale Elementary for 25 years. He even got to teach his two sons when they were in the fifth grade (much to their chagrin!). He retired in 2015. Don was married to Denise
Wurz (Lesmeister) from 1983 to 1995.

US 395 Lanes Reopened After Collision Near Monroe Road

A traffic collision at the intersection of North US Highway 395 and West Monroe Road temporarily blocked northbound traffic. Emergency crews, including multiple fire units and ambulances, responded to the scene to treat individuals and manage traffic flow. All lanes have since been cleared and reopened to regular traffic.

Luitgard Margrete Griffin

One of a kind is what most people stated about Luitgard (Margaret), and that is truly what she was!  She was born in Bamberg, Germany, to Johann and Betty Wagner, as the second child.  She had an older brother, Hans, and a younger sister, Elfriede.

Luitgard was trained as a seamstress in school and worked making men’s suits, among other things. She met the love of her life, Albert Leroy Griffin, in 1951, and they were married on December 6th, 1952.
