Council Conversations: Police Protection

As the population increases in our small town, the question about finding a better way to deliver police protection to the community comes up again.

Although not officially on the agenda for discussion, Councilmember Stapp asked about Deer Park’s current Law Enforcement Contract.  In an interview after the meeting, Mayor Verzal said, “I want to stay ahead of the curve concerning public safety.  It is my primary job.”  He said the current contract with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department is working well on both a practical and economic level for the City of Deer Park, and that he remains in close contact with the Sheriff’s Department to be aware of any alarming trends in crime.  There are currently no plans to launch a task force to look into starting a Deer Park Police Department.  Mayor Verzal stated he is aware, with the influx of new residents, that it is only a matter of time before this subject will need to be revisited.
