The Life of Mozart

How do you tell a room full of rambunctious kids about “The Life of Mozart”?  By having one backdrop, two talented actors, a handful of props, stereo, and a whole lot of energy!  That is exactly what the Traveling Lantern Theatre Company did on July 9th.

Jason Buttafoco portrayed the historical genius Mozart from baby through adulthood, and even the master’s death. The kids loved seeing a grown man in a baby bonnet, a composer losing his wig, and a ghost running through the gym.  Jason was joined by Samantha Nakagak, who played every other role, from Mozart’s mother, sister, girlfriend, to a ghost, and a mysterious nighttime visitor. They played a number of Mozart’s musical pieces while running around and engaging the kids, showing them that even though Mozart lived many years ago, his breathtaking music still inspires both musicians and music lovers today.

Throughout his lifetime, Mozart created 12 different musical pieces using the tune of that we know as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Mr. Buttafoco  and Ms. Nakagak involved the kids by having them pretend to create a 13th version for Mozart, by making noises and stomping their feet.

The Deer Park Library hosted another successful event when they had the Traveling Lantern Theatre Company perform this play.  The kids that watched got a taste of arts they normally would not had been able to see.  The sounds of the kids laughing and shouting suggestions was proof to me how much they enjoyed this event.
