Jiu Jitsu Mix in the Park

Mix Park will be the spot for Deer Park’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes to compete in this year’s Outdoor Jiu-Jitsu Spokane Submission Challenge. Both local and outside competitors from Eastern Washington will meet to compete in all ages and skill levels.

Saturday, June 5 will be quite the day at Mix Park as hundreds of people are expected to attend the Outdoor Jiu-Jitsu Spokane Submission Challenge and the first Saturday Market of 2021. The Saturday Markets are organized and sponsored by the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce. The remaining four Saturday Markets of the summer will be at its regular location of Perrins Field.

Local competitors can be found training in a Deer Park location that thrives with activity every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday between the hours of 4pm – 8pm. That place, “The Gym,” is located at 841 South Main Street. Which is where people aged 5 years to 55+ years gather to learn the art and sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Adam “Smash” Smith, is himself a black belt holder in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kenpo Karate, as well as a professional mixed martial arts fighter, has a huge passion for teaching and spreading the sport. He arranged for the Spokane Submission Challenge to be held in Deer Park, and for many of his students, a first chance to publicly compete and challenge themselves. The Gym’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are divided into three age groups:

  •  5 years – 9 years
  • 10 years – 18 years
  • Adults

Fellow instructor, Joe Smith, has been with the program since its onset. Together, they have been helping locals to release their energy, learn valuable life skills and develop a sense of respect and discipline. It has been a great outlet for kids and adults to combat the COVID blues. They have already outgrown their original capacity and have leased additional space to accommodate the demand.

Because this event is 100% outdoors, even if Washington moves back to Phase 2, the tournament will go on as scheduled.  For more information on the challenge or on becoming a competitor, please go to their facebook event page: FB.me/SpokaneSubmissionChallenge

The Deer Park Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sensei’s (Japanese for teachers) are grateful to the community that has supported them and are offering to waive the vendor fees for all small businesses located in Deer Park that would like to join in the event on June 5th.  If you are interested in joining as a vendor, please send your request via email to:  [email protected]. If you would like to learn more about Deer Park Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and how to become a part of the Jiu-Jitsu family, check out their website at:  DeerParkBJJ.com and  FB.me/DeerParkJiuJitsu
