Holidays & Heroes

Sunday, December 9th, was a busy day for our Miss Deer Park Representatives. The trio of Miss Deer Sydney Riebold, Princess Tawnee Dean, and Princess Ashley Billesbach paired up with Kylene Grub, a Corrections Officer with Spokane County Detention Services, to take one lucky youth, Klover, Christmas shopping for her family. Holidays and Heroes is an annual event that, with the help of several law enforcement agencies and the support of local businesses, helps approximately 100 families in our extended community of Spokane and Kootenai Counties.

This fun-filled day gives youth in our community a chance to interact with local law enforcement, see some of their equipment, meet some of the K-9 crew, and see how these heroes truly care about the people they protect.

The adventures began with a visit to the Valley Precinct, where there was a SWAT vehicle for visitors to explore. From here, the group headed off for shopping at the Walmart on East Broadway with lights blazing and sirens blaring! While shopping for gifts for her family, Miss Deer Park, Sydney, snuck around to get a gift for Klover, too. After the shopping, the group headed to the old Greyhound Park to meet up with volunteers from different Spokane County and Kootenai County agencies and businesses who assisted with gift wrapping. Lunch was enjoyed by all, and then Klover, and the other youth at the event, were able to visit all of the booths set up for collecting items to take home for Christmas enjoyment (including food for a wonderful Christmas feast). The day wrapped up with pictures with Santa and a visit to the helicopter outside.

Holidays and Heroes proved to be a chance for everyone involved to experience the true spirit of Christmas.
