As the publisher of the Deer Park Gazette, I was recently invited to visit with the Journalism Class at Deer Park Homelink. We had a great conversation, including their favorite articles from our website and the journalism business.
I am the pastor who organized and moderated the Candidate Forum in our church building on Wednesday, July 26th. I was very grateful to have all five candidates present, and most responses I received were positive and appreciative. But not everyone was happy. Yes, my “agenda” was to allow the voters to meet, hear from, and speak to each of the five candidates so they could decide for themselves. No one else had offered, so I did.
Local journalism is essential for building strong communities, promoting economic development, and improving residents’ quality of life. Supporting small local news publications is crucial to ensure access to accurate and reliable information.
Boy Scouts from Troop 203 attended the city council meeting. The budget for the splash pad has started the approval process. The city is working toward building and technology improvements. Citizen comments ranged from law enforcement to chickens
After two years, the emergency powers provided to the Mayor of Deer Park have been repealed. In contrast to other previous votes on the subject, this decision was made unanimously and without debate.
Under debate was increasing property tax and adhering to state laws for public meetings. There was also a discussion about continuing the city’s emergency powers during the pandemic.
Did you know you can make sure your ballot has been counted? Only 8 votes separate two candidates in the election for City Council Position #3. Nearly 20 ballots might not be counted as a result of signature issues.
Fireworks at Winterfest, Water and Sewer, along with the city’s budget for 2022, were the main topics of the evening. This was the first meeting held after the city’s annual budget workshop. As a result, most of the meeting was spent reviewing the budget. Also discussed at length was state law regarding communication of the budget workshop date and time so that council and community members could be present.
Election results have just been updated for the Deer Park City Mayoral and City Council races. The Secretary of State certifies final results by December 2nd, 2021. All results posted before certification are unofficial.
After lots of campaigning and two candidate forums, the city council and mayoral election is finally behind voters.
