Our Junior Contributors section is open to all young people ages 16 and under. Create, write, and snap photos throughout the month, and submit one of your best works of art to the editor to be placed in the paper. Each contributor should include their first name, age, and title of the work.

Young poets will take center stage at the North Spokane Open Mic. They will share their original work in a supportive and welcoming environment. This event offers high school students a chance to build confidence before entering the world of competitive poetry slams.
The SCLD Community Art Show is back, inviting artists of all ages to showcase their creativity and love for their community. Free miniature canvases will be available at Spokane County Libraries throughout February. This year’s theme, Celebrate Your Community, encourages participants to highlight what makes their hometown special.
Homelink Drama II presented “A Winter’s Gift.” The production brought Christmas joy and the spirit of giving to the Ken Fischer Theater. The cast filled the stage with monks, minstrels, mayhem, and mistaken identities; this play was truly a gift to the community.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Come on and all to Deer Park Homelink Drama II presentation of “A Winter’s Gift,” a charming Christmas story set in medieval Canterbury. The plot boasts of singing minstrels, monks, Vikings, a missing princess, and the meaning of giving at Christmas time.
The Deer Park High School Drama students gave a masterful performance in their recent production called “Blind Dates and Breakups.” A series of hilarious and outlandish, sketch comedies about some of the perils of dating.
Hear ye! Hear ye! Come one, come all to join in the merriment of the Deer Park Renaissance Faire! Cloverleaf students and instructors have been working tirelessly over the last three weeks to create a medieval free spectacle for the community to enjoy.
Shirley Eleanor (Kintschi) McRae, 91, of Spokane and formerly Deer Park, passed away on December 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Shirley was born to Morris Kintschi and Anna (Tanner) Kintschi on April 29, 1934, in Edwall, Washington. She graduated from Edwall High School in 1952, where she met her husband-to-be, John McRae. John and Shirley were married in 1954, and they lived in Redondo Beach, California, while John served in the U.S. Navy. They returned to Spokane in 1955, living on Five Mile Prairie, then at Dartford, and finally in the house that John designed and built in Deer Park in 1976, where the family lived for over 42 years.
Hometown Animal Hospital has been named the 2026 Winterfest Honored Organization, in recognition of years of compassionate service that extends far beyond veterinary care. From rescuing overlooked animals to supporting local events and businesses, the clinic is making a profound impact on the community.
