The Green House Food Bank and Community Resources has updated its hours. The food bank’s Monday hours now go into the evening to better serve those in need. This decision represents a powerful commitment to aid and connect to residents.
Food insecurity remains a persistent challenge for many individuals and families nationwide, and our Deer Park community is no exception. As economic circumstances ebb and flow, the food bank has remained a steadfast source of support, nourishing those who require assistance. However, recognizing the evolving needs of its patrons, the food bank’s management has taken a proactive step by reevaluating its operating hours.
The Green House located at 211 Fir Ave in Deer Park did run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1pm to 3:45pm, which limited who they could serve. For many who may work a standard 9am-5pm job or those with children, this time was restrictive, posing unique challenges for some individuals. With the change in hours on Mondays from 2pm to 5:45pm, the food bank aims to bridge a service gap. The hours on Wednesday and Friday will continue from 1pm to 3:45pm.
The Green House is more than a food bank. They also provide a range of assistance programs to support residents in the Deer Park and Clayton areas. For those in need, the Food Bank offers monthly access to non-perishable food items, along with weekly opportunities to obtain bread and produce. The Basic Food Assistance Program assists individuals in applying for Basic Food Assistance (EBT cards) and offers aid with annual reviews, with appointments available to receive guidance. Senior adults aged 60 and above can explore the option of Commodity Supplemental Food boxes, known as Senior Boxes, provided they meet income requirements. These boxes can be obtained by reaching out in person or via phone to determine eligibility. While the Clothing Bank usually distributes donated clothing, shoes, blankets, coats, and limited household items on a monthly basis, it is currently unavailable. The organization also distributes essential personal hygiene items, including soap, shaving cream, feminine hygiene products, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, makeup, diapers, wipes, and more, as available. Additionally, the organization offers utility assistance, including support for Avista utility payments once a year and limited aid for non-conventional utility needs such as Inland Power and City of Deer Park water, also on an annual basis.
Individuals can actively support this organization by volunteering time, donating non-perishable goods, and spreading the word about the extended Monday evening hours. Consider donating items in high demand, such as canned proteins, whole grains, and nutritious snacks suitable for children. Every contribution, big or small, goes a long way in ensuring that the food bank continues to serve as a pillar of hope for those facing tough times.
The decision to extend the operating hours of our local food bank on Monday evenings is a testament to the organization’s commitment to adapt and evolve to serve the community best. By addressing the changing needs of its patrons and creating a more inclusive environment, the food bank is poised to make an even more significant impact in the fight against food insecurity.
